Choose a Computer Video Card

Description of video cards:

A video card is a component, inside of the computer, that will take information from the computer and change it so it can be sent to the monitor and displayed on the screen. Most motherboards (is the main curcuit board that connects everything together) has a built in video card. This is great if you just use your computer to send email and surf the internet. If you get into graphics design or video games then you will want an upgraded video card.

The best video cards on the market today are PCI-E video cards followed closely by AGP video cards. PCI-E video cards or PCI-Express video cards are the faster of the two and most motherboards you can purchase today, come with a PCI-E video card slot. You will need to refer to your motherboards spec sheet to determine if you have either PCI-E or AGP, some motherboards will have both. One cool thing about video cards today, is that you can have more than one inside of your computer and they can be chained together to create a super video card. The way this works is, each video card will display to a certain area of the screen, usually seperated into rows.

Why video cards are important is because they use their own processor and memory which will free up resources in your computer to worry about other tasks and will increase the speeed that your computer runs. Video card also produce a better picture at a faster rate when playing high graphic video games, picture rendering, or video editing. You will need a PCI-E or AGP video card when you want to run multiple monitors because 95% of all built in graphics cards on motherboards do not have multiple plugins.
